Stopwatch anyone?

Post by MAX » May 12th 2024, 11:26am

Was my rich Uncles. He used it to time his Trotter horse and its rivals. Remember playing with it as a kid. Now used mostly to time food cooking on a grill. Wonderful old brand name. Back opens up but seems frozen and I dont want to damage it.

Well, I got the back open at only a cost of a few fingernails. Iit seems engine turned and engraved with metal swiss, serial number and the Whitnauer logo in the form of an arch. Too small to photograph. Inside caseback is polished, presumably a place to be engraved. Seems to wind, run and fuction perfectly but I know it was never serviced.

Lovely to view this and a nice story. I had around 12 at one point and like you as I posted them here and there in the background of watch wristies people were asking one by one if they could buy them. I think I have 3 or maybe 4 left now. I do enjoy them.

Tartan 1 - I know you have some beautiful watches left from your posts here.

Been wanting to cut down my collection but just too darn lazy and busy to do so. Lots of Med problems with the SO and she takes up sooo much of my time. No idea of value on this but I would entertain any offers. Didnt mean this to be a sales thread though.

I have seen the Wittnauer Stopwatches selling for anything from £25 to £500. I do not confess to understanding the process of valuation for these or having any knowledge of the models. Likely there is a forum such as Watchlords that has its share of discussion from collectors and hobbyists of the item.

My default go to watchmaker restores lots of antique pocket watches and may have some insight into this and possibly a buyer (at wholesale pricing)

My Sumo GMT is supposedly arriving today, so I will be seeing him later this week to look at aftermarket straps. I will show him your pics and see if he has any insight.
Thank you WIS. That would be quite helpful. Dial seems perfect and crystal is unscratched as much as I can tell without a loop. Slight mark at the split seconds pusher.

No rush, thanks. Hope your Sumo gets there OK.

Showed my watchmaker your pics.

He said very nice high quality piece. Longines was at top. Wittenauer was next level down.

Noted the chronograph complication, the second second hand. Said this was called a split second timer, used to time horses, so you could time single laps, lengths, whatever, and leave the overall time running.

Said difficult to price, but ballparked it at 500-1k USD but you have to find the right buyer.

He came up with the horse part without any prompting from me. So maybe trying to find a buyer in horse community may be an avenue.

Thanks for taking the time to ask about this. Dont have time to persue it right now but no rush anyway.
