Does Anyone Actually Go Diving With a Dive Watch?

Postby koimaster » October 11th 2017, 8:58am

Ask yourself, how many buddies do you have with dive watches? Now ask yourself, how many of them dive with one?

Didn’t think so.

One man who has made a living doing so is Jason Heaton, a Minnesota-based journalist, who is known to watch geeks as a test pilot for the world’s most illustrious undersea timepieces. As a contributor to magazines like Men’s Journal and Outside, and sites like Hodinkee and Gear Patrol, Mr. Heaton, 47, has scuba-tested many dive watches, ranging in price from a few hundred dollars for a Scurfa to a $145,000 Richard Mille over the course of more than 400 dives around the world.

Fresh off a dive off Sri Lanka, where, wearing a Rolex Submariner, he explored the wreck of the H.M.S. Hermes, an aircraft carrier sunk during World War II, Mr. Heaton discussed the continuing allure of dive watches in an era when many scuba enthusiasts consider them obsolete.

I do, but it's only 5 ft deep, I don't want to risk drowning.

Diving? No, but I do take extended hot soapy showers - surely the most grueling test of all....

Does 'desk diving' count...

I've taken watches into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean (all have held up well), but have never dived. Bucket list stuff for a city schmoe like me.

None of that diving bullshit for me. No, sir. Mama Conjurer didn't raise no idjits. Ain't no way I'm going thirty feet down in the fucking water unless somebody's already capped my ass. Laws, no. M-O-O-N, that spells no fucking diving.

I use my watches diving or otherwise when swimming in the swimming pool. Most recently, I spent a week in a calfornia pool, weekend in a Lincoln City hot tub, and a month in the backyard stock tank with a 116515 strapped to my wrist. This is not to mention the three consecutive weekends I spent in the 'couve in the pool at pop's condo.

Muff diving?

For hot tubs I need a minimum of an Omega Plo Prof (none o your teensy Rolexes big enough for me, no sirr!) preferably the white one.

I have dived once (first and last lesson in the water) with a Breitling Superocean, back in the late nineties. I felt like a fucking fraud. Bombproof watch though. Sold it for something like £400 to "upgrade" to an Explorer II. Well we all make mistakes:)

I'm with Tom Cullen on this, despite my collection being overly weighted in dive watches

This, well, kinda. Been in the waters off St. Lucia, Jamaica, Antigua, Exuma, Turks and Caicos, Grand Cayman, Nassau, and Florida with one or another of my dive watches. Not too deep anymore after heart surgery though.
