Manufacture A. Lange & Söhne reveals the secrets of assembling the most complicated watches - the Tourbograph Perpetual model from the Pour le Mérite series.

At the Geneva-based Salon of High-Time Watchmaking, SIHH, the A. Lange & Sohne manufactory presented the fifth watch of the Pour le Mérite series. Due to the presence of five complex devices, assembling a mechanism of 684 parts is an extremely difficult task. Only the best watchmakers are able to connect different subsystems of the mechanism, maintaining the level of accuracy necessary for their perfect coordinated action.

"Content is above form" - this could be the fundamental motto of the Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Mérite. Two of the five realized in the hours of complex devices are designed exclusively to improve the accuracy of the stroke. Fuzeyno-chain transmission ensures uniform supply of mechanical tension from the winding drum to the balance unit. The balance is installed inside the rotating carriage of the tourbillon, so that gravity does not adversely affect its functioning. The functions of the split-chronograph are controlled in a classic way using two column wheels. The perpetual calendar module with pointer pointers is designed to save space, so that it surrounds the tourbillon. The assembly of the mechanism presents a much more complicated task than it may seem at first glance. "Even in order of magnitude, it's difficult to assess the amount of work that is required to establish a harmonious interaction between the five complex devices," says Anthony de Haas, development director at A. Lange & Söhne. In fact, for each instance, the build process is built individually. "Even if each of the 684 parts of the mechanism is made strictly with the micron level tolerance, the watchmaker still has to make a lot of microscopic adjustments in order to be sure that all the mechanisms of the mechanism interact flawlessly and in the way that was intended by the mechanism designers," - he continues. "To do this, the watchmaker needs the highest knowledge of hourly technique, experience, masterly level of manual work and almost infinite patience."



The photos provided by the manufactory show a number of key steps in the assembly of the mechanism, this is only a small part of the overall process, consisting of several hundred operations.

After the master wraps the chain around the pre-assembled winding drum, it starts installing both of these parts into the mechanism. The chain then joins the fusee, inside which the planetary gear is pre-installed - it provides a continuous transfer of tension from the winding drum to the balance unit even at the time the mechanism is actuated. The planetary gear assembly, assembled from 38 parts, operates in a confined space - the diameter of this device is only 8.6 mm.

Using the ratchet wheel, mounted on the square pin of the crown, the watchmaker will be able to finally adjust the level of the minimum tension of the winding drum.

Assembly of a tourbillon

The assembly of the tourbillon is one of the most difficult in implementing the stages of the Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Mérite. The tourbillon bridge needs to be installed above the chronograph bridge so that the tourbillon carriage rotates between two diamond overhead stones. The curved-shaped tourbillon bridge, designed for these watches, set new challenges for the craftsmen in finishing the details. The technique of flat mirror polishing of steel parts used in its finishing should be performed so impeccably that the light incident on the part should be reflected only in one direction. In this case, reflected light is visible only when you look at the detail from this angle, and when viewed from other angles, the polished surface should look black.

The mechanism of the chronograph with a split function is installed on the back of the clock. For its assembly, 136 parts are required. When assembling it, all the parts interacting with the column wheels are manually installed and carefully adjusted to other parts with which they interact. All wheels, levers, axles and springs of the chronograph mechanism must interact in a clearly prescribed order within a fraction of a second to prevent the possibility of any mechanical conflict.

The length of the second-wheel axis of the split-chronograph is about one centimeter, this axis runs from the dial of the clock to the split-chronograph wheel on the opposite side of the mechanism through the hollow axis of the second hand of the chronograph. The axis of the second wheel of the split-chronograph is ground from a single round rod of hardened steel, during the manufacturing process the axis is carefully hand leveled.

All chronograph functions are controlled by two column wheels. One of them serves to deflect the braking clutch of the second wheel of the splatteror. The brake clamp is freely mounted on its axis, so that its shoulders themselves are balanced along the rim of the second wheel of the split-chronograph, when the wheel is stopped, the same pressure is applied from both sides. The surfaces of the brake clamp and the second wheel are decorated with longitudinal and circular fine grinding, the small teeth on the wheel are left rough so that the engagement at the stop is reliable.
