AMCHPR China 2018 Tour April 10th to May 10th

Postby AlbertaTime » January 11th 2018, 12:19am

After two challenging years and if the fates permit, I'm once again fortunate enough for a new journey to China :-)

So far, only a few things have firmed up.

Tickets are purchased, and I land in Guangzhou on the 10th, and will stay there to the 15th, leaving that day for Zhengzhou till the 18th, where I will see My friend Sky Han and his family.

Further, and of course, the very first time slot I firmed up after setting the "from and to" dates of the trip was time with my brother Ma Rong and his wife, and that's May 1st to 5th for his happy convenience, so it makes sense that I'm in Beijing from the 5th till the 10th, when I'll return to Canada...wishing I had more time. :-(

So right now, the flexible time is between April 18th and the 30th/31st.

Certainly, the trip is going to include watch content--that's a given, but my main focus this trip is going to be seeing friends, and doing some sight-seeing and photography. I'm getting older and I may never have the chance to visit China again. I might, too, a few more times, who knows Image but there's sure no guarantees in this life and I have my priorities.

And, I'm already in a situation, even this soon into planning, where I know I can't possibly see everyone in China whose friendship I hold with huge gratitude, and that's intensely frustrating to me. My sincere hope is that no one feels disrespected if face-to-face isn't possible this trip, but the many, many kindnesses I've been shown couldn't be adequately repaid, anyways, even over many trips, and that's just the truth of it.

That said: people and watches go together--and it's still watches that directly or indirectly led to every friendship I have in China--so if any Watchlords members in China (?) or anywhere close want to touch bases while I'm in China, let's see if we can work it out, please :-)

I'll use this thread to keep everyone posted on progress.

Update:

I'll be in Shanghai, arriving on the 18th of April. Ben Chee of Maison Celadon is meeting me there, and we're trying to put together a meet/greet with some folks. Hopefully, Joel Chan of Micmicmor Vintage Watch will be there (one of China's top and most knowledgeable VCM collectors), as well as some CHA/CWOWC members, and other local-to-Shanghai VCM collectors and watch lovers, etc.

Invite is open! Let me know...

So far:

April 10th to 15th - Guangzhou/Shenzhen/Zhuhai - meeting with Brad Green
April 15th to 18th - Zhenzgzhou/Xinmi with Sky Han
April 18th to 21st - Shanghai/Suzhou/Tongli Ancient (River) Town
April 21st to May 1st - (I wonder what's gonna fill this space...)
May 1st to 5th - Shijiazhuang with Ma Rong
May 5th to 10th - Beijing

Up till now I haven't but I'm seriously thinking about it. The weird thing is, there was a period of a few years back in the late 70s and early 80s that I was shooting video almost every day.

I'm looking at a new camera to take but I'm on a budget, so 4k might be out, but 1080p is doable, so... (maybe a Canon G9x II...but it's a touch narrow...oh, the decisions...)
